Lonestar Bound "J"

    JACKSON, John
John Jackson was born about 1809 in either Ohio or Tennessee. Each state listed on different censuses. His parents are unknown. Mary Winchester Jackson was born about 1810 in either Kentucky or No. Carolina. They married about 1827 probably in Tennessee. They have four children while in Tennessee: Aaron in 1828, Olive in 1831, a male I. or J. in 1832, and Silas in 1835. While in Mississippi a daughter C. was born in 1836. John and Mary arrived in Texas 1 March 1837 and claimed patent land in, then, Shelby Co., which became Harrison Co. in 1838 and eventually (where they claimed) Upshur and Greeg Co. Part of their 1820 acres was in what is now downtown Longview, Harrison Co., TX. After arriving in Texas more children were born: Hester Ann in 1838, Moses in 1840, William M. in 1842, and Sara Jane in 1847.Apparently they came alone to Texas with their children but in 1850 there appears several other Jackson families living adjacent to them in the census with heads of households about the same age as John, who apparently have just arrived in Texas., judging by their children's places of birth. These people must be related but the Jackson heads all list their place of birth as NC. Mary Winchester Jackson died sometime after 1850 and before 1856 and her place of burial is unknown.John sold Josuha Moses "Mose" Jackson a grist mill, saw mill, and cotton gin, and some property with a house. This property was located on Big Cypress Bayou in what is now Marion County a few miles from Jefferson, Texas.John and his family shortly pulled out and removed to Coryell Co., where he remarried, as did several of his older children. John and his second wife, Mrs. Sara Lucinda Sterling, lived in Coryell Co. until sometime after the war. He lived on land in Coryell County that became part of Fort Hood. He then moved to Menard Co. (Ft. McKavett) where he supposedly drowned about 1879 or 1880 in the San Saba River while returning at night from jury duty.

    Joyce, George W.
George W. Joyce was born about 1831 in Georgia. At some point, George’s family moved to Alabama. In 1857 he married Martha Hearn. In 1858 George and Martha, along with George’s mother and his four brothers, moved to Texas and settled in Collin County. George had frequent attacks of “cramp colic,” probably appendicitis. Martha was never very strong and was said to have consumption, probably T.B. George and Martha had three boys, Simeon, Martin and David.

George joined the Confederate army on July 10, 1862 in McKinney, TX. The company muster roll for January to June, 1863 lists him as absent and sick in the hospital. It is possible that he died of a ruptured appendix. Martha died in the same year.
