KELLEY/KELLY, Preston Otto "Tobe" Kelly/Kelley
Preston Otto "Tobe" Kelly/Kelley was born in 1852. He was 14 yrs. old when he witnessed the murder of Buck Taylor of the infamous Taylor-Sutton Feud in Clinton, Dewitt Co., TX... After this event, he signed on with cattle drives as a horse wrangler moving out of South Texas counties: Live Oak, Atascosa and Dewitt and heading into Kansas... He was returning to South Texas after one of the drives when he met Sam Bass. They rode together until they came upon the camp of three Mexican men near Round Rock, TX. The Mexican men invited them to supper. Bass did not speak or understand Spanish, but "Tobe" did. During the course of conversation, "Tobe" overheard the Mexicans planning to rob him and Bass. He related this observation to Bass and Bass told him to watch the Mexican on his right side and he would watch the two on the left. "Tobe" and Bass rode free from the altercation with their money and belongings intact...
"Tobe" left the company of Sam Bass shortly after this event and returned to the origin of the next cattle drive to take another herd into Kansas. He stayed on the cattle drives until he was about 21 years old...
He married and settled down in Mills County, TX where he lived out the remainder of his life and died at age 84...
This and other stories about the life of "Tobe" Kelly was told to me by my father, the grandson of "Tobe" Kelly...
It would have been a pleasure to have known this man in his place and time.
